John-Willy Rudolph was born in Beijing, China, in 1941, grew up in Japan,  and has studied history of religion, economics, sociology and social anthropology at the University of Oslo. After university he was for several years occupied with economic/¬administrative work with various Norwegian organisations in Norway and abroad, as well as with freelance work in radio and television.
